Meet Kamryn Yates (he/they) - A.B.L.E’s Spring 2024 Marketing and Social Media Intern

Kam recently graduated from DePaul University with a BFA in film & tv production and a concentration in post production and video editing. They also work as Marketing Manager & Accessibility Coordinator at Han Training - a local queer and trans-affirming gym. He is passionate about social justice advocacy, and has been working towards becoming an ethical and impactful organizer for about seven years.

Their dream is to develop documentary and archival projects that allow members of marginalized communities to tell their own stories and choose how they’d like to be memorialized. He’s excited to develop his advocacy and digital accessibility skills alongside everyone at A.B.L.E.. Kam hopes to bring an outside perspective that will help ABLE’s programs reach more actors, artists, and partners.

“My social and sensory differences have always made it a challenge for me to explore and enjoy my life and passions. My quality of life drastically improved, however, once I started being in community with other disabled adults and honoring my support needs. I am very grateful to get the chance to work with an organization that facilitates and advocates for community spaces that are made with, by, and for disabled people.”
— Kamryn Yates

When Kam’s not working, you’ll probably find him at the gym or laying in bed with their cat (pictured below) recovering from socializing.

A low angle selfie of Kam smiling next to their light orange cat, Richard, who is not paying attention to them or the camera. Kam’s hair is messy and Richard is lounging.

Funding for this position has been supported by a Chicago Arts Recovery Program grant at the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events, and comes at a crucial time:

As we continue to navigate an uncertain world, it’s more important than ever to get new eyes and energy on our work. We’re so excited for Kam to bring their passion and personal lived experience to this position and help us get the word out about all that we do!
— Katie Yohe, A.B.L.E. Executive Artistic Director

We are so excited to welcome Kam and have their support in reaching out to new audiences and partners. Kam will be working with us through June 2024 creating social media posts, drafting messaging, organizing press contacts, and more!
